Antique Immaculate Virgin Ex Voto | Colonial Mexico
Since ex-votos usually tell a story, they almost always bear a text that recounts the event and often locates and dates it as well. This beautiful piece was painted on December 25, 1895 in Mexico.
The bottom left reads - "Lady Mrs. Juana Rosa, imploring God's health in intercession of parishioner Immaculate Virgen Rosario, so the Lord can give what is beneficial."
Because an ex-voto is not based on something copied, the artist could give free rein to his creativity. This piece has a few mends on the back of the canvas and a small purely cosmetic crack on the front corner.
